Slate's Bicycle Diaries

OK so the holidays are here. I've been a bit lax on the blogging, and on the biking for that matter. Still commuting by bike every day, but more often it is the short 3 mile downhill to the office vs. the 20 mile loop out to Bethesda and back into DC. Furthermore, I have not attended one 'cross race. Even after getting that spiffy S-Works Tricross. Lame.

So what have I been doing? housework, home improvement, beer brewing and eating. We're in the process of preparing to gut our kitchen. Before doing that, there are other prep-type projects that need to be completed, like new lighting and plumbing in the basement, it's a long story there, but they need to happen before the kitchen starts. The lighting part is done, the plumbing is next... I'm trying to decide if I should take on the plumbing myself or contract that out. It's a big job. It will require digging up the basement floor and putting in new sewer pipe, splicing into what is already there.

In any event, I came across this interesting story in slate today: http://www.slate.com/id/2131049/?GT1=7407.
